  MALCOLM EARLE SMITH
BA(hons). Trombone and brass tutor (week two)
Malcolm Smith

www.malcolmearlesmith.com

New Orleans music, Swing, Bebop, Contemporary jazz, Blues, Soul: Malcolm Earle Smith is equally at home playing all jazz styles. Well known for his work as trombonist, vocalist, composer and teacher, he is one of the most versatile and entertaining musicians on the London scene.

Central to Malcolm’s inspiration is his passion for jazz tradition, his depth of musical knowledge, his commitment to ensemble playing and his honest, stylish delivery. His sound is expressive and lyrical, rooted in tradition but strongly influenced by contemporary language.

"there are no barriers to his joyful appreciation of the whole span of jazz history...the only qualification is that the music is ‘real’ – not motivated by posture, fashion of notes for their own sake".
Digby Fairweather

MBE MA (Cantab) Saxophone and woodwind tutor (both weeks)

Award-winning writer and broadcaster, Dave Gelly is the author of numerous books, including 'Being Prez: the Life & Music of Lester Young' and 'Stan Getz: Nobody Else But Me'. Dave Gelly has played or recorded (on tenor, clarinet and bass clarinet) with a bizarre collection of people, from Sir Richard Rodney Bennett to Arthur ’Big Boy’ Crudup, including along the way Neil Ardley, Kenny Baker, Maynard Ferguson, Jack Bruce, Keith Emerson, Art Themen and John Cleese (don’t ask).

"Dave Gelly is a fine, natural jazz musician"
Humphrey Lyttelton: The Best Of Jazz, BBC R2

Dave learned clarinet as a kid, but is largely self-taught on saxophone. Jazz studies consisted of listening to records for hours on end, from the age of 12, and trying to figure out what was going on. Now has a pretty good idea of what’s going on, from
King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band to the second Miles Davis Quintet, and he will endeavour to explain on request. Believes in swing, melody and playing from the heart.

"His saxophone playing is like his writing -
carefully crafted and always to the point" Jazz UK
