20 Elisa Caleb Elisa Caleb - vocals, Jo Caleb - guitar, Sam Lasserson - bass, Dave Hamblett - drums A sophisticated and charming fusion of classic jazz, folk and gospel" Blues and Soul Born to Barbadian and Philipino parents, Elisa began singing at a young age in school choirsand at church. Music in her early years consisted of listening to The Carpenters and Motownartists like The Four Tops and The Temptations. It was as a teenager, when she got her first stereo, that she was introduced to Jazz and began listening to the music of her favourite vocalists; Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Elisa went on to study Law and Theology, as music had primarily always been for enjoyment. And it was, whilst she was at university, that Elisa discovered at the age of 19 that she wasone of the youngest people in the UK with breast cancer - a revelation that didn’t just see Elisa meet death face to face, but also make the decision that music was something she wanted to pursue professionally. She began this in the Autumn of 2005, upon the encouragement of her now husband and fellow musician Jo Caleb. One of the standout tracks on her debut album is the beautifully written ‘The Wind’ penned by Jo about Elisa. ‘The Wind’, the debut single, is a standout track on quite an exceptional album. On the lighter side of jazz, there are elements of an early Norah Jones and Joni Mitchell-esq emotion delivered perfectly and modestly, leading the listener into a decadent world they would not wish to leave. One smitten journalist wrote about Elisa’s performance of The Wind: ‘Once in a while a voice reaches deep inside you. That’s how I first heard Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Sarah Vaughan and Peggy Lee. And if this song and Elisa’s gloriously subtle phrasing don’t do that for you, you’re a poor lost soul.’ - Duncan Heining, Music Week Magazine. Her debut album ‘Carry Me Home’ is a collection of tracks that sees the fusion of classic jazz, folk and gospel. In addition to the standout new single ‘The Wind’, there are also great tracks like ‘The Surrey with the Fringe on Top’ and ‘My Funny Valentine’ performed with graceful charm and radiance. Produced by Femi Temowo (Amy Winehouse, Roachford, The Roots) and featuring a superb band, ‘Carry Me Home’ is a delightful journey through love, longing and life. She recently received a very touching live review from the literary editor of The Times who was actually meant to be reviewing a David Hare play but ended up writing more on Elisa who was performing before it started in the National Theatre Foyer ! ‘Anyone who bought a bit of early Ella Fitzgerald Decca vinyl at a gig in the mid-forties, would have been pleased, I'm sure. Did they ever sell records even at small shows in those days? Did Lady Ella sell them? I don't know. Anyway, there is just a sparklinghint of the First Lady of Song in Elisa Caleb. I've been listening to the pre-showstar ever since.” Sir Peter Stothard, The Times. Since 2005 Elisa has already performed in Paris, Moscow, Barbados, Belgium, Greece, Italy and at numerous venues across London and the UK. She has performed with great artists such as Tony Kofi, Seb Rochford (Acoustic Ladyland, Polar Bear), Soweto Kinch, Guy Barker, Stan Sulzmann, Robert Mitchell, Mike Outram, Julian Siegel, Phil Robson, Gary Husband and many others. An attractive singing voice...she brings some effective personal touches to familiar songs without ever losing sight of the intentions of the composers and lyricists. ” Jazz Journal Magazine http://www.elisacaleb.com |
